“You Did Very Well”

This weekend was a little rough and, with the news from Orlando, I was feeling a little off for days.

Sunday: I ended up hanging out with some friends from high school at a coffee shop which is a thing I never do so that was a bit strange. I /tried/ to study while I was there but only got one assignment done before I figured that I wasn’t going to get anything else done. I’m glad I went, though, because it had been a while.

Monday was the first day of week two of summer school. I’m blaming it on feeling so off from the weekend and a series of bad events that involve cops blocking my parking deck, but I was a whole two minutes late to my marketing research class. I’m never late for class, so that in itself was awful. It was made worse by the fact that my professor counts you as absent if you’re even 30 seconds late, so I didn’t get credit for being there for the 2 and a half hour class period. She barely even let me turn in my assignments, one of which was a project, which would have left me screwed in my final grade.

Fortunately, I was able to turn them in.

On Tuesday, I spent the morning at my Zoo internship. Tuesdays are always a little chaotic with Takeover Tuesday posts on social media. There’s anywhere between 12 to 20 posts of photos and videos that have to be posted at specific times on these days. Pair that with the normal responsibilities and it’s a little messy for a while. On Tuesday I also got to eat lunch with the agency? Which I’m not entirely sure what that means but they were very nice people.

Wednesday was my first exam of the semester in marketing research. We had managed to go over 6 chapters in three class periods, so they were all on the exam. My professor has told me that I did “very well” but I have yet to see the actual grade so I don’t know if I fully believe that. I know I missed a few questions, but I’m hoping it’s a decently high grade because I want to get another 4.0 this semester!

Thursday was back to the internship in the morning. My new short days on Tuesday/Thursday seem to always be busy now. What little down time I had before seems to be almost completely gone but it’s a good busy. I make Paid Social advertisements on Facebook and write social media posts for the week. I have a few research projects that I’m working on for the marketing department that I spend time on as well. In the class I have after work we had a surprise quiz that I believe I did exceptionally well on but we’ll see when we get grades back.

Friday was the first day at my internship where my direct manager was not there. It was a little stressful, I admit. I was responsible for all of the Instagram posts as well as Google+ (who cares about Google+ though, let’s be honest). We were preparing for Father’s Day weekend so there was a lot of social media posts about specific animals and making sure we have the correct animals in pictures. I made it through, though, and I feel a little more confident in my abilities now (and if I’m doubting myself there’s always someone that I can go to for help).

As for my video internship, I feel like I don’t talk about it much on here. I’ve been signing up for video topics on Monday for the past two weeks, producing the video by Wednesday, and then doing edits through the end of the week. So far I’ve been doing restaurant round-ups because I’m waiting for the equipment they’re sending to arrive as well as for the deposit that I’ll use to buy my new camera. I want my videos to be high quality so for now I’ll continue to do the videos with minimal filming until I get everything organized.

I’ve learned the name of the game this summer is to be constantly prepared. I study and read before class, take detailed notes during class, and have everything that’s due scheduled into my phone. There’s not a lot of time for “fun” or “hanging out” right now in my life but I feel like this summer will be worth it when I’m graduating and will have such great experience on my resume. It’ll be worth it when I’m exploring Disney World this fall again.

Lions, Tigers, + Pandas! Oh my!

Can I just continue to use review titles for my blog titles or….?

This week was my fourth week with the company, which means I’ve been here for a full month now. That’s 1/4 of my internship over, which is kind of insane. This week was a lot of office work and handling social media posts. I did a few different research programs and got to sit in on project meetings.

Because of the heat and how busy I was in the office this week, I actually didn’t get to take any new photos this week (other than a few I took just before going home today – but they didn’t turn out). I did get to go to the talent show for the Safari Day Camp session this week, though. It was adorable and strange to think that I was once one of those camp members. I always wonder what 9 year old me would have thought if you told her that I would be working as an intern for the Zoo when I was older.

This was my last week of my current schedule because next week my classes start. I’m taking three classes this summer through Georgia State, and I’m a little worried with how much work it’s going to add onto my workload already. I’m sure I’ll be able to handle it, but I probably won’t be able to sleep as much as I am now.

Bird Show Preview + A Visit

My third week at the Zoo brought along a staff open house to the new bird show! I’m excited that I get to take part in these sort of behind-the-scene things that I didn’t take advantage of while on my Disney College Program. It’s pretty obvious how much everyone cares about their role here at the Zoo and that they love what they’re doing, and this much was definitely obvious during the bird show preview.

After the bird show preview we then went over to watch the preview for another show that they’re introducing to the Zoo. This one was aimed at children and as such it was pretty different than the more adult-focused bird show. It was still very cute and we were actually joined by several families who stopped by to see the show.

After both of the show previews, we got to go back stage to look at where the meals for the birds are prepared as well as some of the enclosures. I really like some of the photos I got from this.

On Thursday, a friend from my time at the Disney College Program was visiting the Zoo so I got to meet up with her for a short time while I was out shooting. It was nice to catch up and to tell her a little about the animals we were near (Idgie the Red Panda and the Tanuki brothers – Thor and Loki!).

We always need new panda photos for social media because we post a lot about our furry friends so I went over to see what I could get. The pandas were in their inside enclosures, which usually means a more condensed crowd and a glass glare when trying to get shots. I couldn’t believe my luck, though, when there was immediately a gap right in front of where Lun Lun was sleeping! Right now, these are my favorite photos I’ve taken during my three weeks at the Zoo.

Friday was a slower day since most of our work for the week had already been done in preparation for Memorial Day Weekend. I got to work on some projects with advertisements and social media, but didn’t get to go out of the office to shoot anything that day. I actually got to go home a little early for the holiday weekend!

Pandas, Pandas, Pandas – First 2 Weeks

With my first two weeks at my marketing internship with Zoo Atlanta done, I thought I’d look back and reflect on what I’ve learned so far. Apparently I came at the right time of the year because attendance is up and there always seems to be things for us in the marketing department to be doing.

During my first day I probably went to three or four meetings and was starting to think maybe my internship would just be bouncing around meetings, but I’ve learned that’s not so. I got to go to a staff meeting which apparently only happens twice a year (maybe four times a year? I’m not sure). They announced awards for members who had been with the Zoo for 5, 10, even 25 years. I listened to a lot of speakers presenting these awards and it was amazing to hear from people so passionate about what they’re doing caring for these animals.

It helps that we also got snacks at the end.

While a lot of my first two weeks was getting used to the routine and my “daily tasks” I also got to go out and shoot a few photos for social media. It’s always fun to be able to roam the Zoo for a little bit and just see what’s going on. I also went to a learning seminar of sorts for staff members, where I learned about how the Zoo uses their finances and how grants work. While I don’t love finance, it was still cool to learn everything and I’m glad I went.

All in all, my first two weeks have been fantastic and I’m looking forward to many more until the end of my internship.
